Style is about expressing your personality through your clothing. Our personalities are so varied and different that is strange that when it comes to clothing we tend to be sheep and follow the safe and conventional route. As varied and starkly different our personalities are, so should the way we dress.
Style is about expressing your personality through your clothing. Our personalities are so varied and different that is strange that when it comes to clothing we tend to be sheep and follow the safe and conventional route. As varied and starkly different our personalities are, so should the way we dress.
Just as we should live to eat rather than eat to live, we should to live to dress. The vast majority of us tend to dress according to what convention says and society insists. Admittedly clothing is essential, not just as way of covering up our modesty but as a form of protection from the elements, but other than that it should be a way in which we express our own identity.
Everyone is born with their own individual style sense, it is as they grow up that they begin to get influenced by the people that surround them, the codes of dressing enforced on them at school, work etc. If you observe children that are left to dress at their own free will you often find that they each come up with their very own unique style and this often reflects their particular personality. They don’t shy away from colour and pattern, which we as adults use sparingly on a day to day basis.
So yes by the time we reach adulthood, those of us that have been swept away by the conventionalities of our surroundings are often found stuck in a closet of clothing that really doesn’t speak our personality. Very few of us are lucky enough to have been able to maintain our very own personal look and with the most outrageous of the lot often frowned upon by society.
Of course style is a matter of opinion, what one person thinks works another will think is hideous. To be considered stylish also doesn’t necessarily mean you don all the latest fashions from head to toe, it’s about creating your own individual look, by combining old with new, plain with pattern finding that trade mark look that speaks your personality. Of course your style will always develop as you mature and make different choices in life, and it’s important understand that style is never static it always evolves just as you do.
To find your inner stylist can be quite daunting particularly if you haven’t paid much attention to it. The first point of reference would be to look at your personality, are you a happy bubbly person, or a calm down to earth kind individual? Also what is your lifestyle like, are you a socialite or do you have an active sports lifestyle? What role do you play, the parent, the follower or the leader? These are important questions to consider and they will help you get closer not only to what is either practical or essential for your lifestyle but help you determine what you actually like to wear. It’s important to discover what you actually enjoy wearing and what you feel comfortable in, and you can only do this by trying on as many different styles as possible, and once you try something on that speaks your personality you will instantly know. It’s amazing how an outfit can completely transform a person, from the way they walk to the way they speak and carry themselves. If you are finding the process a little difficult on your own seek guidance from a friend or professional help, there are many stylists out there who do this for a living and it makes the whole process so much easier.
For those of you that have reached that point in your life that you feel you need to either re-discover your own style, there are a few basic rules that can be used as a GUIDE. I stress the word guide because I don’t believe that there is one particular way in which to dress, there are guidelines that can be followed and these will put you in the right direction to re-discovering your inner stylist. Style is about confidence, with the right attitude and dose of confidence anyone has the potential to look great in the most mediocre clothes, but clothes are also the voice of your soul and they can speak volumes about who you are, and they have the ability to instantly change your mood and make you feel confident. However it is important to remember that clothing doesn’t make you who you are, it can speak volumes about who you want to be or desire to be, but essentially they can never change you wholly, that’s why it’s important to make the right statement that speaks of you. And just as we are all individuals so should be your style.
